Craftwork Brewery Dark Lord
This Belgian Dark Strong Ale is a formidable beast of a beer, crafted through a double mash and a marathon four-hour boil. The year-long aging process has polished its intense character into a harmonious sensory experience. Deeply complex, it offers a rich bready-toasty malt foundation layered with concentrated dark caramel and dark fruit notes of raisins, plums, and figs. Subtle spicy phenols, reminiscent of black pepper and soft vanilla, dance alongside a refined, perfumy alcohol warmth. The extended boil provides a Maillard-driven depth, while the finish remains remarkably smooth and elegant, reflecting its award-winning pedigree as a classic interpretation of a Quad.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown with a SRM of approximately 20. It features a huge, dense, moussy light tan head with excellent persistence and fine lacing. The long aging period results in a clear, brilliant presentation.
Aroma. Intense and multifaceted, led by rich bready-toasty malt and deep caramel. Strong esters evoke a concentrated medley of dried cherries, dates, and prunes. Background spicy phenols suggest light black pepper and a hint of vanilla. A noticeable but smooth, perfumy alcohol presence adds sophistication, while hop aroma is not noticeable.
Taste. The initial impression is one of decadent malt richness, echoing the aroma's dark caramel and toasted bread. Complex dark fruit flavors including raisins and figs are prominent, balanced by a medium-low bitterness. Fermentation provides subtle peppery notes. The finish is moderately dry and clean, avoiding any syrupy heaviness, with a lingering warmth and deep malt complexity.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a luxurious, creamy texture. Carbonation is high but finely beaded, preventing any sharpness on the tongue. A distinct, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, with no perceived astringency.
