Conwy Brewery’s Golden Gate is a bold American IPA that leans into its quad-hopped nature to deliver a robust sensory experience. The aroma is dominated by high-intensity American hop notes, suggesting bright citrus zest, resinous pine, and a touch of tropical fruit. Beneath this hop intensity, a clean, grainy malt backbone provides necessary structural support, preventing the assertive bitterness from becoming overwhelming. On the palate, the interplay between toasted malt sweetness and sharp, resinous hop oils leads to a crisp, lingering finish. It captures the essence of a classic West Coast style with a balanced yet decidedly hop-forward profile.
Appearance. Medium gold to light amber in color (approx. 8-11 SRM). Displays a medium-sized, off-white head with excellent persistence and distinctive lacing. Clarity is brilliant to clear.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of grapefruit, floral blossoms, and sticky pine resin. Low to medium-low maltiness offers hints of light caramel and clean, crackery grain. The fermentation profile is clean with very low fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression is a massive hit of citrusy and resinous hop flavor followed by a firm, assertive bitterness consistent with 50-60 IBU. A moderate malt backbone provides flavors of toasted bread and light biscuit. The finish is medium-dry to dry, leaving a clean, hoppy aftertaste with a slight lingering resinous quality.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture from the heavy hopping. Carbonation is medium-high. Very light, smooth alcohol warmth is present, with no harsh astringency.
