This sessionable British Brown Ale presents a remarkably deep sensory profile despite its modest 3.2% ABV. Characterized by the brewer as a dark mild, it centers on a robust malt foundation where rich layers of Chocolate malt and various dark and crystal malts create a complex tapestry of toffee, toasted nuttiness, and light cocoa. A subtle, spicy hop character provides a delicate counterpoint to the malt-forward core, ensuring the finish remains balanced rather than cloying. It offers the depth and complexity of a much stronger ale, blending the gentle roasted hints of darker grains with the smooth, approachable drinkability of a classic pub staple.
Appearance. Dark reddish-brown (18–22 SRM) with excellent clarity; topped by a low to moderate off-white to light tan head with fair retention.
Aroma. Moderate intensity featuring a sweet malt core of toffee and nuts, complemented by light chocolate notes. A very low spicy hop aroma and faint fruity esters provide subtle background complexity.
Taste. Initial impression is malt-focused but balanced, featuring toasted bread, toffee, and nutty flavors derived from the crystal malts. The chocolate malt provides a light, non-roasted cocoa finish. Bitterness is medium-low, keeping the balance even, while light spicy hop flavors emerge toward the medium-dry finish.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with moderate carbonation; smooth and approachable without any alcohol warmth or astringency.
