Cloudwater’s What Are Frogs? is a vibrant Gose that celebrates the bright, citrusy intensity of hand-selected Motueka hops. This refreshing sour beer opens with a punchy bouquet of freshly juiced lime and zest, supported by a faint, cracker-like malt backbone. The palate is defined by a crisp burst of lime acidity and a restrained lactic sourness, perfectly balanced by a delicate touch of salinity that enhances the mouthwatering finish. Effervescent and light-bodied, it offers an incredibly clean, dry profile where the citrus lingers long after the swallow. It is a masterful, thirst-quenching interpretation of the historical German style.
Appearance. Straw to light yellow (3–4 SRM). Unfiltered with a moderate to full haze. Tall, white head with tight bubbles and good retention; highly effervescent.
Aroma. High intensity of fresh lime juice and zest, complemented by the tropical lime character of Motueka hops. Low, clean lactic sourness and a faint, bready cracker malt base are present, with a subtle mineral salinity in the background.
Taste. Initial burst of tart lime juice followed by a moderate, clean lactic acidity. Low cracker-like malt flavor provides a foundation for the fruit. Salinity is noticeable but restrained, providing a mouthwatering quality without being overtly salty. Very low bitterness; the finish is bone-dry and crisp with lingering citrus.
Mouthfeel. Light body with a very high, spritzy carbonation. The combination of acidity and salt creates a tingly, refreshing mouthfeel. No alcohol warmth is perceived.
