Wide Load is a formidable Double IPA that commands attention with an aggressive hop profile led by a heavy-handed application of Nelson Sauvin and Citra. This beer showcases the unique sensory complexity of Nelson Sauvin, offering prominent notes of gooseberry, lychee, and passionfruit, underpinned by a characteristic hint of diesel fuel and burnt rubber. Citra amplifies the tropical intensity, driving the experience into overdrive. Despite the robust 8.1% ABV, the profile remains dangerously drinkable with a clean, supportive malt backbone. It delivers a punchy bitterness and a dry finish, embodying the bold spirit of modern Pacific Northwest brewing while maintaining a crisp, lean structure.
Appearance. Deep gold color (approx. 7 SRM) with excellent clarity and a moderate-sized, persistent white head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Intense hop aroma characterized by distinctive Nelson Sauvin notes of white wine grapes, gooseberry, and passionfruit, alongside a complex layer of lychee and tropical citrus from Citra. A faint, dank diesel and resinous quality is present. Malt is low and neutral, offering a clean, crackery background with a very light, clean alcohol presence.
Taste. Strong hop flavors mirror the aroma with dominant passionfruit, gooseberry, and tropical citrus. Bitterness is high and firm but remains smooth without harshness. The malt character is low and unobtrusive, providing a soft, neutral base that allows the hops to lead. The finish is very dry and clean, featuring a long, lingering hoppy aftertaste with a touch of resin.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly oily texture. Carbonation is medium-high, providing a crisp bite. A restrained, smooth alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, with no hop-derived astringency.
