Cloudburst Brewing Memory of a Memory
Memory of a Memory is a modern interpretation of the classic American IPA, bridging the gap between early 2000s Pacific Northwest intensity and contemporary polish. An unfiltered sheen of haze introduces an assertive aromatic profile dominated by pungent grapefruit and resinous pine, driven by a heavy-hitting hop bill of Chinook, Centennial, Cascade, and Simcoe. Rahr 2 Row provides a clean base for the Simpsons T-50 to impart a nostalgic, light caramel sweetness that rounds out the high perceived bitterness. It finishes dry with a lingering citrus zest, capturing the sharp esters and rugged character of a bygone era with 2022 refinement.
Appearance. Medium gold to light amber with a distinct, unfiltered haze. It features a medium-sized, white, persistent head that leaves significant lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop-forward aroma featuring heavy layers of grapefruit, orange peel, and dank resinous pine. A background of light caramel and toasted bread supports the hops, alongside moderate, sharp fruity esters.
Taste. An initial punch of citrus pith and pine needles is followed by a medium-low grainy sweetness. The bitterness is firm and assertive, yet balanced by the slight caramel malt body. It finishes medium-dry with a long, resinous aftertaste and clean fermentation character.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth texture. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp bite, while the 7% alcohol content contributes a very light, well-integrated warmth without any harshness.

We were back to thinking about IPAs brewed in the PNW in the early 2000s, and then remembered we brewed a rendition a couple years back. This still comes to mind – they were assertive, rough around the edges, with a crystal malt presence that sometimes came off sweet and/or muddled, high perceived bitterness, unfiltered sheen of haze, with aromatic notes of grapefruit and pine trees and sharp esters. And while we look back fondly on these formative beers, if we were to replicate one, to the “T”, in this day and age, it probably wouldn’t be all that great. Those are not fighting words – we’re just being honest! And it won’t stop us from re-imaging what they could’ve been, with what we know now, twenty years later, and making one with all the things we looked back fondly on, while editing away some of those less desirable components. We hope this beer tastes familiar to you, but also, like it was brewed in the year 2024.
