Black Hag presents as a rugged Oatmeal Stout, opening with a deep tapestry of roasted notes derived from its complex five-malt grist. The base of Golden Promise provides a sturdy foundation for the rich, bready Munich and nutty Brown malts, while Chocolate and Crystal Dark malts deliver layers of espresso and decadent cocoa. A distinctive citrus brightness emerges from the First Gold and Fusion hops, offering a subtle hint of orange that cuts through the malt depth. The inclusion of oats ensures a velvety, smooth texture, leading to a satisfyingly rich finish that evokes autumnal warmth and sophisticated dark chocolate complexity.
Appearance. Deep brown to opaque black in color (35-40 SRM). Features a thick, creamy, and persistent tan head with excellent lacing and a fine bubble structure.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with dominant roasted coffee and milk chocolate notes. A light grainy-nutty oatmeal character is present alongside a hint of toasted bread. Subtle earthy and floral hop notes from First Gold are accompanied by a faint, sweet orange-like ester.
Taste. Initial flavors of smooth roasted grain and dark chocolate. The mid-palate reveals nutty and toasted malt character, supported by a medium bitterness that balances the residual sweetness. A distinct orange zest flavor from the Fusion hops emerges toward the back. Finishes medium-dry with a lingering coffee-and-cream and toasted oat aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a remarkably smooth, silky, and velvety texture provided by the oatmeal. Moderate carbonation and low alcohol warmth, consistent with its sessionable strength. No harshness or astringency.
