Designed as a quaffable winter seasonal, this Foreign Extra Stout balances classic roast intensity with high drinkability. It pours a deep, near-opaque brown, releasing aromas of moderate roast and dark chocolate. On the palate, a complex layer of sweet dark chocolate and chalky cocoa nibs takes center stage, supported by subtle malt sweetness and a distinct mineral note. Despite its heritage, it maintains a light to medium body that enhances its repeatability. The hop bitterness is present but restrained, leading into a surprisingly short, sharp finish that cleanses the palate for the next sip.
Appearance. 35-40 SRM. Very deep brown to near-black. Opaque. Thick, tan head with good retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Dominant notes of dark chocolate and cocoa nibs with a supporting character of lightly burnt grain and coffee. Low earthy hop aroma and minimal fermentation esters.
Taste. Initial impression of sweet dark chocolate followed by the drier, chalky character of cocoa nibs. Malt-derived sweetness is present but balanced by a mineral note and firm hop bitterness. Low earthy hop flavor. The finish is surprisingly short and sharp, lacking the heavy lingering roast of larger stouts.
Mouthfeel. Light to medium body, which is atypical for the style but increases drinkability. Moderate to moderately-high carbonation. Smooth texture with a slight chalky dryness from the roast. Minimal alcohol warmth.
