Sismo is a powerful American Barleywine that gains refined complexity through maturation in French oak barrels. The sensory journey begins with a deep copper hue and a persistent tan head. On the nose, intense aromas of toasted bread and light caramel from the malt backbone intermingle with resinous and citrusy hop notes characteristic of the style. The French oak adds elegant layers of vanillin and subtle spice. The palate is full and chewy, delivering a rich malty sweetness balanced by aggressive hop bitterness. Hints of stone fruit esters and a gentle, warming alcohol presence lead to a long, complex finish where wood tannins and lingering hop resin provide a sophisticated conclusion.
Appearance. Medium copper with ruby highlights (SRM 14-18), moderately-low light tan head with fair retention and some lacing, brilliant clarity with visible legs.
Aroma. High intensity; rich toasty and bready malt with light caramel; moderate resinous and citrusy hops; low fruity esters; noticeable French oak providing vanilla and soft woodiness; integrated alcohol warmth.
Taste. Rich malty sweetness of toasted grain and honey; assertive resinous hop flavor; aggressive bitterness; low stone fruit esters; French oak adds vanilla and light tannin; balanced towards bitterness despite malt weight; lingering bitter and warming finish.
Mouthfeel. Full body with a chewy, velvety texture; moderately low carbonation; noticeable alcohol warmth; light woody astringency.
