This massive Imperial Stout is an exercise in decadence, transformed by thirty-six months of maturation in maple rye barrels. The sensory experience is dominated by an intoxicating wave of toasted coconut and Madagascar vanilla beans, creating a profile reminiscent of dark chocolate macaroons and Samoa cookies. The extended aging process integrates the high alcohol into a smooth, velvet-like texture while drawing out rich spice, oak, and vanilla from the wood. Each sip transitions from indulgent dark chocolate fudge and toffee into a long, sticky finish of maple syrup. It is an intensely rich, dessert-like expression where the coconut and barrel character define the overarching harmony.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque with high viscosity that produces thick legs on the glass. The head is deep tan with moderate to low retention, common for a beer of this strength and adjunct density.
Aroma. High intensity with a dominant perfume of toasted coconut and sweet maple syrup. Beneath the adjuncts lies a complex base of dark chocolate, cocoa, and black licorice, complemented by Madagascar vanilla and a subtle spicy rye note from the barrel.
Taste. The palate is greeted by an immediate, intense flavor of dark chocolate Mounds bars and toasted coconut. The malt profile is exceptionally rich, featuring layers of toffee and fudge. Barrel aging contributes notes of oak and vanilla, while the maple rye barrels provide a distinct maple sweetness and a hint of warming spice. Bitterness is moderate but serves primarily to balance the massive sweetness. The finish is long and lingering, tasting of sticky maple and chocolate-dipped macaroons.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and luscious with a velvety, coating texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Despite the high alcohol content, the warmth is smooth and well-integrated, providing a gentle glow rather than a sharp burn.
