This Imperial Stout is a decadent sensory experience, merging the intense roasty depths of the base style with luscious hazelnut and robust coffee. On the nose, dark chocolate and espresso notes intertwine with the distinct, sweet nuttiness of toasted hazelnuts. The palate is a complex landscape of bittersweet cocoa, charred grain, and dark fruit esters, supported by a significant 12.5% ABV that provides a smooth, integrated warmth. Despite its richness, a firm bitterness balances the malt sweetness, leading to a lingering, velvety finish reminiscent of chocolate hazelnut spread and cold-brew coffee, all while maintaining the bold, viscous character expected of a high-gravity stout.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (SRM 40+). Pours with a dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving oily legs on the glass indicative of its high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant aromas of freshly roasted coffee beans and toasted hazelnuts layer over a base of bittersweet chocolate, black licorice, and charred grain. Subtle esters of dried plums and raisins are present, alongside a soft, clean alcohol note. Hop aroma is very low, allowing the adjuncts and roasted malts to lead.
Taste. Intensely flavorful with an initial impression of sweet chocolate and nutty hazelnut. The mid-palate reveals deep roasted malt character, featuring espresso and dark cocoa. Bitterness is firm but balanced by the significant malt body. Fermentation provides light dark-fruit esters such as prune and fig. The finish is long and warming, with a lingering bittersweet roast and a hint of hazelnut creaminess.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied, chewy, and viscous with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, avoiding any harsh or solventy edges. No significant astringency despite the high roast level.
