Carbon Brews Black To the Future
This Black IPA offers a striking interplay between deep roasted malts and vibrant American hops. On the nose, a bold dry-hop of Amarillo, Simcoe, and Citra unleashes a concentrated wave of resinous pine and bright citrus zest. The palate reveals a complex yet harmonious balance; earthy undertones and layers of dark chocolate and subtle caramel provide a smooth, dark backdrop for the persistent hop flavors. Despite its 8.5% ABV, the beer maintains the characteristic drinkability of the style, finishing dry with a firm, clean bitterness. It is a modern, high-gravity interpretation of the style, marrying the shadows of roasted grain with the brilliance of New World hops.
Appearance. Opaque, deep ebony to black (35-40 SRM). Pours with a persistent, creamy, light tan head that leaves moderate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma characterized by resinous pine, grapefruit, and orange peel from the Citra and Amarillo. Supportive malt notes of dark chocolate and toasted bread are present, with a low caramel sweetness and a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Leading with firm bitterness and hop flavors of pine and citrus pith. The malt presence is moderate but restrained, offering flavors of bittersweet dark chocolate and light caramel without any burnt or ashy harshness. Earthy notes emerge mid-palate, transitioning into a dry, lingering finish with a crisp, hoppy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting its 8.5% ABV without being hot or solventy.
