This Belgian-influenced Specialty IPA presents a multifaceted sensory profile, characterized by its striking copper hue and a sophisticated fermentation character. The Belgian yeast creates an immediate aromatic impact, offering a spicy, peppery bouquet that precedes vibrant hop notes of succulent melon, resinous pine, and sharp citrus. On the palate, a base of toasted bread and rich caramel provides a sturdy malt foundation, balancing the firm bitterness. The interplay between the fruity hop character and the spicy phenols creates a complex middle, leading to a crisp, dry finish. It is a well-structured ale that successfully marries New World hop aromatics with traditional continental yeast expressions.
Appearance. Deep copper to amber in color (14-17 SRM) with brilliant clarity. Supports a dense, persistent off-white head with good retention and moderate lacing.
Aroma. Moderate-high intensity aroma featuring a complex blend of melon, resinous pine, and spicy citrus hops. A notable spicy, phenolic ester profile from the Belgian yeast is present, supported by a background of toasted bread and light caramel malt sweetness.
Taste. Initial flavors of toasted bread and caramel are quickly overtaken by a bold hop profile of melon and pine. The Belgian yeast contributes a peppery spiciness that complements the spicy citrus hop character. Bitterness is firm and assertive but remains smooth. The finish is dry to off-dry, with a lingering hop resin and spicy phenol aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy mouthfeel. Moderate carbonation provides a refreshing bite. A light, well-integrated alcohol warmth is noticeable but not distracting.
