Burton Bridge Brewery Overhand

Overhand is a punchy American Brown Ale that bridges the gap between traditional British malt depth and modern hop vibrancy. Building on a base of chocolate and caramel malts, this collaboration radiates a robust nutty core. The use of Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe hops provides a high-intensity aromatic profile of bright grapefruit, floral blossoms, and resinous pine. On the palate, the sweetness of toasted malts is met by a firm bitterness, leading to a crisp finish where citrus zest and forest floor notes linger. It is a balanced, medium-bodied ale that showcases the synergy between rich dark grains and bold New World hopping.
Appearance. Pours a deep, clear mahogany to dark brown with ruby highlights. It is topped by a persistent, light tan head that leaves moderate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Rich aromas of milk chocolate and toasted nuts are prominent, seamlessly interwoven with bright citrus notes of grapefruit from the Cascade and floral hints from Centennial. A subtle undercurrent of pine and passionfruit from the Simcoe adds complexity to the malty-sweet foundation.
Taste. Initial impressions of sweet caramel and bready malt are quickly balanced by a medium-high hop bitterness. Flavors of dark chocolate and toasted crusts provide depth, while the late-boil additions of Cascade, Centennial, and Simcoe contribute layers of orange zest and resinous pine. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering interplay of roasted grain and citrus pith.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate to moderately high, providing a clean lift on the palate. At 5% ABV, there is no significant alcohol warmth, but the bitterness contributes a light, drying sensation.
