Burnt Mill Brewery

This Black IPA, a collaboration between Burnt Mill and Lost and Grounded, delivers the aggressive punch of a West Coast IPA through a dark, sophisticated lens. The hop profile is driven by the classic citrus and pine of Centennial and Amarillo, bolstered by the unique candied fruit and deep berry notes of the newly released Erebus hop. These bright, citrusy orange characteristics are supported by a subtle foundation of dark malt, offering hints of toast without heavy roast. The experience concludes with a firm, lasting bitterness and a clean, dry finish characteristic of the style.

Appearance. Deep ebony to black in color, appearing opaque in the glass. It is topped by a persistent, creamy, light tan head that leaves consistent lacing. Clarity is high, though difficult to perceive due to the depth of color.

Aroma. High hop intensity featuring prominent citrusy orange, floral pine, and distinct notes of sweet berries and candied fruits. A background of moderate toasted malt and a faint whisper of chocolate provides support, while the fermentation remains clean and free of heavy esters.

Taste. The palate lead with a sharp hop-forward impact of lemon peel, orange marmalade, and dark forest berries. Bitterness is medium-high and assertive but not harsh. Low chocolate and toasted bread flavors provide a smooth malt backbone that never veers into burnt or ashy territory. The finish is notably dry and crisp with a lingering citrus resin aftertaste.

Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied with a smooth, moderately creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing a lively prickle on the tongue. There is a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth consistent with its strength, and zero astringency.
