Burnside Brewery’s Black Alert is a focused American Stout that emphasizes the synergy between dark-roasted grains and fresh coffee. This espresso-forward pour presents a deep, midnight-black appearance topped by a persistent tan head. The aroma is dominated by freshly ground coffee beans and dark chocolate, layered with subtle citrusy and resinous hop notes characteristic of the style. On the palate, bold flavors of bittersweet cocoa and charred grain provide a robust foundation for a firm bitterness. At five percent ABV, it remains approachable, offering a medium body and a clean, dry finish with lingering notes of cold-brew coffee and pine.
Appearance. Jet black (40 SRM) and completely opaque. Features a large, persistent light tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity roasted aroma dominated by fresh coffee and dark chocolate. Moderate resinous and citrusy hop character provides a bright counterpoint to the deep malt. Low fruity esters are present, though the nose remains clean and free of acrid or burnt acidity.
Taste. Leading with bittersweet chocolate and intense espresso flavors. Medium-high bitterness is well-integrated with the roasted malt profile. Low caramel sweetness provides a brief mid-palate balance before transitioning into a dry finish. Hop flavors are moderate, showing notes of grapefruit peel and pine resin that linger alongside a light charred grain aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate-high carbonation provides a crisp lift. Very low alcohol warmth and minimal roast-derived astringency.
