This Munich Dunkel presents a rustic, unfiltered take on the classic Bavarian dark lager. As a naturtrübe specialty, it emphasizes a deep malt richness characterized by freshly toasted bread crusts and hints of dark chocolate. The use of traditional Munich malts provides a robust, doughy core that remains smooth and elegant rather than heavy. Despite its slightly elevated strength, the fermentation remains clean, allowing subtle herbal hop notes to play a supporting role. It balances a soft, dextrinous sweetness with a medium-dry finish, creating a comforting, liquid-bread experience that remains highly drinkable and authentic to its Franconian-influenced roots.
Appearance. Deep copper to dark brown (approximately 22 SRM) with a garnet tint. It features a creamy, persistent light tan head with good lacing. Unlike filtered versions, this beer is naturtrübe (naturally cloudy) with a noticeable haze.
Aroma. Moderate-high intensity of toasted malt, reminiscent of baked bread crusts and toasted nuts. Subtle undertones of milk chocolate and caramel are present. Clean lager profile with no yeast-derived esters or diacetyl; a very low spicy hop aroma is detectable.
Taste. The initial impression is dominated by rich, bready Munich malt flavors. Notes of toasted grain and bread crust are prominent, supported by light nutty and toffee accents. Bitterness is medium-low and restrained, providing enough balance to prevent cloying sweetness. No harsh roast or burnt character. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering, soft malty aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a soft, smooth, and slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation provides a gentle sparkle. There is a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth given the 5.8% ABV. No astringency or harshness.
