This massive Imperial Stout showcases an assertive interplay between deep roasted grains and the distinctive medicinal character of Laphroaig barrels. On the nose, intense notes of peat smoke, iodine, and sea salt collide with dark chocolate and espresso. The 10-month aging period integrates the 10.3% alcohol into a velvet-smooth experience, layering charred oak and vanilla over a foundation of black currant and prune. The palate is dominated by bittersweet cocoa and a lingering, phenolic smokiness, finishing with a warming, sophisticated dryness. It is a bold, complex exploration of Islay peat and roasted malt depth, offering a maritime twist on a classic heavy-bodied stout.
Appearance. Jet black (40+ SRM) and completely opaque. It pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head that shows moderate retention, leaving oily legs on the glass indicative of high alcohol and viscosity.
Aroma. High intensity. The profile is led by prominent medicinal peat, wood smoke, and a hint of brine from the whisky barrels. This is layered over a rich base of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and dark dried fruits like raisins and figs. Low earthy hop notes and a clean, warming alcohol presence round out the complex bouquet.
Taste. Initial impression is a powerful wave of dark roasted malt and smoky peat. Mid-palate reveals flavors of dark chocolate, black licorice, and burnt grain.
