This formidable Imperial Stout, inspired by Viking tradition, presents a pitch-black, viscous pour that signifies its immense depth. The sensory journey begins with intense aromas of dark chocolate and roasted coffee, softened by a prominent, creamy vanilla presence. On the palate, the robust roasted malt core is elevated by a distinct addition of sea salt, which sharpens the bittersweet chocolate notes and adds a unique mineral complexity to the finish. Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). It forms a dense, persistent dark tan head with moderate lacing. High viscosity is apparent in the glass, leaving noticeable legs upon swirling.
Aroma. High intensity. Deeply roasted grain notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate dominate. These are layered with rich vanilla bean and a subtle briny hint from the sea salt. Low dark fruit esters of raisins and prunes are present, alongside a clean, warming alcohol character.
Taste. Initial impression is of rich, dark specialty malts, providing flavors of cocoa, black licorice, and charred toast. A creamy vanilla sweetness emerges mid-palate, countered by a firm hop bitterness and the savory edge of sea salt. The finish is lingering and bittersweet, with a complex interplay of roasted malt, mineral salt, and smooth alcohol warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer’s weight and creaminess. A significant but smooth alcohol warmth is present and well-integrated.
