This Imperial Red IPA offers a striking sensory landscape inspired by hibiscus iced tea. A robust malt foundation driven by Melanoidin malt provides a deeply toasted, bread-crust backbone that anchors the profile. This richness is met by a pungent aroma explosion of resinous pine and bright citrus, courtesy of Centennial and Simcoe hops. The addition of hibiscus flowers imparts a distinctive floral tartness reminiscent of red berries, which weaves through the hop-forward bitterness. Expect a complex interplay of savory malt, sharp resin, and exotic floral notes, finishing with a warming, dry intensity characteristic of a bold Specialty IPA.
Appearance. Deep ruby-red to burnished copper; clear with a slight haze. Persistent, dense off-white to light pink-tinted head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring prominent notes of grapefruit peel and sharp pine resin from Centennial and Simcoe. Supporting this is a rich, bready malt character with hints of toasted crust. The hibiscus adds a distinctively tart, cranberry-like floral layer with a clean fermentation profile.
Taste. Initial rich, toasted malt flavors with honey and biscuit notes from the Melanoidin malt. High hop bitterness quickly takes over, delivering flavors of orange pith and forest floor. The hibiscus contributes a crisp, tannic tartness and red fruit acidity. Finishes off-dry with a lingering floral bitterness and well-integrated alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. A noticeable but pleasant alcohol warmth is present without being hot or fusel.
