This barrel-aged English Barley Wine, based on the brewery's De Rentmeester, presents a masterclass in complexity. The high ABV and Calvados barrel conditioning infuse the base with heady aromas of baked apple, oak, and cider brandy. Rich layers of toffee and biscuit from traditional British malts provide a decadent foundation for concentrated notes of raisin and dried plum. The Calvados aging adds a sophisticated fruity ester profile that complements the earthy English hop character. It is a dense, warming sipper that balances intense malty sweetness with a velvety texture and a refined, vinous finish shaped by its time in wood.
Appearance. Deep copper to mahogany (16–22 SRM) with brilliant clarity and ruby highlights. Pours with a thin, creamy, off-white head that shows low retention. Viscous legs are prominent on the glass due to high alcohol and density.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich toffee, caramel, and toasted bread. Strong fruitiness featuring dark raisins and dried figs, intertwined with distinct Calvados notes of spiced apple and pear. Substantial oak presence with hints of vanilla and a soft, well-aged alcohol warmth.
Taste. Immediate, multi-layered malty sweetness characterized by toffee, biscuit, and dark caramel. Mid-palate introduces significant fruit esters—raisin and plum—amplified by the apple-brandy influence of the Calvados barrels. Hop bitterness is moderate, providing enough structure to balance the malt without being aggressive. The finish is long and warming with lingering notes of oak and vinous oxidation.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A smooth, significant alcohol warmth is present but remains rounded and integrated, lacking any harsh burn.
