This Imperial Stout presents an imposing sensory profile defined by twelve months of maturation in Islay whisky casks. The aroma is dominated by intense peat smoke, medicinal iodine, and sea spray, layered over deep base notes of espresso and bittersweet chocolate. On the palate, the collaboration with Emperor's Brewery yields a viscous, chewy texture where rich roasted malts meet charred oak and earthy smoke. Significant alcohol warmth from the 13.3% ABV integrates seamlessly into a finish of lingering tar, dark fruit leather, and campfire embers. It is a powerful, complex beer that balances intense peat character with traditional roast intensity.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a small, dense, dark tan head with moderate retention. High viscosity creates distinct legs on the glass when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity. Prominent Islay whisky character featuring peat smoke, iodine, and a hint of salinity. Beneath the smoke lies rich dark chocolate, roasted coffee, and black licorice. Esters of dried plums and figs are present, alongside oaky vanilla and a clear but smooth alcohol presence.
Taste. Intense initial impact of roasted grain and dark cocoa. The Islay influence is assertive, contributing flavors of campfire smoke, earthy peat, and a medicinal whisky note. Firm bitterness balances a moderate malt sweetness. The mid-palate reveals black currants and raisins, leading to a long, complex finish of charred wood, espresso, and warming alcohol.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a thick, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout the experience, remaining well-integrated and pleasant.
