This American Stout, a collaboration between De Molen and BrewDog, masterfully integrates the spiced essence of Dutch gingerbread and Scottish Clootie Dumpling into a dark, robust frame. On the nose, bold roasted coffee and dark chocolate notes from the malt bill provide a sturdy foundation for aromatic layers of star anise, cinnamon, and nutmeg. The palate is defined by deep charred grain and bittersweet cocoa, enriched by a spicy complexity that culminates in a distinctive liquorice-like finish. Moderate hop bitterness provides structure, while the slightly elevated 7.2% ABV offers a smooth, integrated warmth that complements the lingering, spicy aftertaste.
Appearance. Jet black (SRM 40) and opaque. Features a large, persistent head of light brown foam with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Strong roasted malt aroma with qualities of espresso and dark chocolate. Prominent spicy notes of star anise, cinnamon, and nutmeg are layered over a low resiny hop character and light fruity esters.
Taste. Initial impression of heavy roasted coffee and bittersweet chocolate. Medium malt sweetness is balanced by medium-high bitterness. Flavors of cinnamon and nutmeg are evident, while star anise contributes to a distinctive liquorice-like aftertaste. The finish is medium-dry with a lingering spicy and slightly burnt grain quality.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Medium-high carbonation and a noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth. Minimal roast-derived astringency.
