Brouwerij Bliksem’s Mad Mountie BA is a decadent Belgian Dark Strong Ale, transformed by 14 months of maturation in maple syrup barrels. The sensory profile is defined by a luxurious interplay between deep, bready-toasty malts and a complex array of dark fruit esters, specifically raisins, dried plums, and figs. The extended barrel aging introduces a distinctive layer of woody vanilla and rich maple sweetness that perfectly integrates with the 11% alcohol. Subtle spicy phenols of black pepper emerge from the Belgian yeast, providing a sophisticated counterpoint to the dense caramel and toffee core. It is a warming, velvety sipper with a harmonized, monastic finish.

Appearance. Deep coppery-brown with ruby highlights (18–22 SRM). It features a huge, dense, moussy tan-colored head with excellent persistence and fine lacing. The clarity is excellent.

Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of rich, bready-toasty malt and dark caramel. Prominent dark fruit esters of raisins, plums, and dates are primary. The maple barrel aging adds a clear layer of vanilla, oak, and maple syrup. Low spicy alcohol and subtle peppery phenols are present; hops are not noticeable.

Taste. Initial impression is of rich, malty sweetness featuring caramel and toffee. This is followed by deep flavors of figs and cherries. The 14-month barrel aging contributes a smooth maple character and soft vanilla. It has medium-low bitterness and a well-integrated alcohol presence. While the finish is moderately dry, it leaves a lingering, harmonious impression of dark fruit and maple.

Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, velvety texture. Carbonation is high but smooth, providing a lively lift that prevents the beer from feeling syrupy. There is a strong, well-integrated alcohol warmth that is smooth rather than hot.
