Brouwerij Alvinne Sour'ire De Mortagne Smoked Peach & Mango

Sour Ale 11 º
This barrel-aged sour Quadrupel presents a complex layering of rich, dark malts and vibrant acidity. The nose is dominated by a sharp lactic sourness typical of the Morpheus yeast strain, interwoven with the distinct aroma of smoked peach and succulent smoked mango. Deep notes of raisin and plum from the malt base collide with earthy smoke and light vanillin from extended barrel aging. On the palate, a bold tartness balances the residual sweetness of the smoked stone fruits, while the high alcohol content provides a comforting warmth. The finish is remarkably dry for its strength, leaving a lingering tang of acidic fruit and campfire embers.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to dark brown (25–30 SRM). Slight haze present from fruit solids and barrel maturation. Pours with a thin, tan-colored head that exhibits poor retention due to high acidity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity. A sharp, clean lactic sourness is dominant, immediately followed by the pungent, sweet-savory scent of smoked peach and mango. Rich malt notes of caramel, dark bread, and raisins provide a sturdy backdrop, alongside subtle woody oak and a hint of phenolic smoke. No hop aroma is present.
Taste. Initial impression is a bracing, clean lactic sourness that gives way to a complex malt profile featuring toffee and dried dark fruit flavors. The smoked peach and mango contribute a savory fruitiness that persists throughout the sip. Hop bitterness is undetectable, with the balance driven entirely by the interplay of acidity and fruit-smoke. The finish is off-dry to dry with a long, tangy, and smoky aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full body with a viscous, coating texture. Carbonation is moderate. Significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present. Despite the high acidity, the beer remains smooth with very low astringency.

Sour’ire De Mortagne Smoked Peach – Alvinne

The first batch of this was an Insight Brewing collaboration Sour’ire de Mortagne with peaches we smoke ourself added to the barrels. It’s hard to pick a style, Quadrupel, Flemish Sour Ale, Fruit beer?  But since we added peaches but above all, I think Smoked Beer due to the home-smoked peaches. Of course, fermented with our own wild house yeast strain ‘Morpheus’.

I have been trying hard for three years to get some Sour’ire De Mortagne Smoked Peach for Otter’s Tears after finally getting to taste it at the De Molen beer festival Borefts, I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

If you fancy something sour and very different, give Budino Acido a try from Pastore.
