This Imperial Stout presents an imposing sensory profile defined by a deep, layered malt bill. Pale Chocolate and Chocolate malts drive intense notes of dark cocoa and toasted nuts, while Brown malt adds a subtle biscuit-like complexity. The inclusion of Oatmeal results in a luscious, silky flow across the palate. High-alpha CTZ and Citra hops provide a firm, resinous bitterness and bright citrus accents, which are further amplified by the zesty addition of orange peel. Subtle molasses-like sweetness from brown sugar melds with a potent alcohol warmth, creating a complex, warming finish that lingers with roasted grain and citrus oils.
Appearance.Jet black and opaque (40 SRM). Pours with a thick, dense, dark tan head with excellent retention and persistent lacing. High viscosity is evident by visible legs on the glass.
Aroma.High intensity. Dominant aromas of bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and heavily toasted bread from the Pale Chocolate and Brown malts. Resinous and citrusy hop notes from Citra and CTZ are prominent, accompanied by a bright, aromatic orange peel character and a hint of dark brown sugar. Clean fermentation profile.
Taste.Intense and complex initial impression of dark fruit and roasted coffee. Rich chocolate and caramel malt flavors are balanced by a firm bitterness (60 IBU) and resinous hop character. The orange peel provides a pithy citrus edge that cuts through the residual sweetness of the brown sugar. The finish is long and warming with a lingering bittersweet cocoa and piney aftertaste.
Mouthfeel.Full-bodied, thick, and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture aided by the Oatmeal. Moderate carbonation provides enough lift to prevent cloying. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated.
