Bridge Road Brewers Celtic Red Ale

Irish Red Ale 5.3 º 22 IBU
Bridge Road Brewers’ Celtic Red Ale is a robust interpretation of the Irish Red Ale, showcasing a deep copper-red hue and a complex malt backbone. Driven by caramelized malts and a touch of roast barley, the sensory experience is defined by rich toffee and smooth chocolate notes, accented by a nostalgic hint of orange citrus reminiscent of Jaffa cakes. Noble hops provide a clean, structural bitterness that balances the initial sweetness. While slightly more substantial than traditional Irish examples, it maintains a classic dry, roasted finish that cleanses the palate, making for a sophisticated yet highly drinkable malt-forward pint.
Appearance. Deep reddish-copper to garnet (12–16 SRM). Features a creamy, persistent off-white head with fine lacing. Displays brilliant clarity.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with a dominant malt-forward profile featuring toasted bread, rich toffee, and a faint hint of dark chocolate. Very low earthy and floral hop aroma from noble varieties. Clean fermentation profile with a subtle hint of orange zest.
Taste. Initial soft sweetness of toffee and caramel. The mid-palate transitions into grainy-biscuity notes and a smooth chocolate character. Moderate bitterness from noble hops provides balance without being aggressive. The finish is characterized by a signature roasted grain dryness and a lingering touch of citrus. Clean, well-attenuated, and balanced slightly toward the malt.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body, providing a more substantial weight than traditional session versions. Moderate carbonation. Smooth, creamy texture with a very light, well-integrated alcohol warmth and no harsh astringency.

Originally brewed for Beechworth’s annual Celtic festival, the Celtic Red Ale is now a Bridge Road staple.

The Celtic festival is held in November each year and aside from the music, having a few ales is a big part of it.

The Celtic Red Ale is classed as an Irish Red Ale in beer speak. It presents a wonderful deep red hue and a creamy off white head. The Red Ale has a big malty body owing to the use of caramalised malts and roast barley. The flavour is slightly roasted with smooth notes of chocolate, toffee or Jaffa, bringing back childhood memories of the occasional Jaffa that was actually consumed and not just thrown at the back of someone’s head. The malts are backed up with the use of noble hops to provide a good lick of bitterness. At 5.3% this one is sure to make you merry.
