Vecchia Lodi 2020 presents a sophisticated expression of an English Barley Wine, celebrating a decade of brewing with depth and grace. The 2020 vintage reveals a rich, decadent malt profile dominated by layers of toffee, dark caramel, and dried figs. The passage of time has softened the English hop presence, leaving behind subtle earthy and tea-like whispers. At 11% ABV, the alcohol is beautifully integrated, offering a gentle, vinous warmth reminiscent of fine sherry. This is a contemplative sipper, where chewy malt complexity and a lingering, dark-fruit sweetness define a velvety, full-bodied experience intended for slow appreciation and further cellar aging.

Appearance. Deep mahogany with ruby highlights (SRM 18-22). Features a low, creamy off-white head with modest retention. Brilliant clarity with visible viscosity and prominent legs on the glass wall.

Aroma. High intensity and deeply complex. Strong malt-forward notes of burnt sugar, toffee, and toasted bread. Pronounced esters of raisins, prunes, and dried cherries. Subtle oxidative notes of aged sherry and port are present. Hop aroma is low, providing a faint earthy and marmalade-like backdrop. Soft, rounded alcohol presence.

Taste. Initial rich, malty sweetness featuring complex layers of caramel, biscuit, and dark fruit leather. Moderate English hop bitterness that has mellowed with age, providing just enough structure to balance the residual sugars. Flavors of marmalade and earthy tea emerge in the mid-palate. The finish is moderately sweet and lingering, with a complex, vinous character and a hint of well-aged alcohol.

Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and exceptionally chewy with a luscious, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth spreads across the palate without any harshness or fusel burn.
