This reimagined Scottish Light bridges the gap between sessionable tradition and barrel-aged intensity. The base beer provides a delicate foundation of toasted shortcake and blossom honey, which is dramatically transformed by maturation in bourbon barrels. This process imparts a dark vanilla twist and layers of rich brown sugar, raisins, and spiced fruit. While maintaining the style’s hallmark light body, the beer reveals an intricate complexity featuring notes of chocolate and a subtle hint of smoke. It is a masterful display of how wood aging can elevate a lower-gravity profile into a sophisticated sensory experience, balancing malt sweetness with spirited depth.
Appearance. Deep copper to dark brown (18–24 SRM). Clear with a low to moderate, creamy off-white head that exhibits fine lacing.
Aroma. Moderate to high intensity. Strong notes of toasted shortcake, blossom honey, and caramel are layered with prominent bourbon barrel characters of dark vanilla and charred oak. Subtle esters of raisins and spiced fruit are present, alongside a faint, clean hint of smoke.
Taste. Initial impression is malty and bready, quickly followed by complex layers of brown sugar, toffee, and chocolate. The barrel aging contributes a significant vanilla and oak flavor that complements the honey-like sweetness. Hop bitterness is low, serving only to prevent the malt from becoming cloying. The finish is slightly dry with a light roasty character and lingering notes of dried fruit.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a moderately creamy texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Despite the modest gravity, there is a light, well-integrated alcohol warmth from the barrel treatment. Smooth with no astringency.
