Black Jacques is a remarkably complex Saison that defies its dark hue with the signature dry finish of the style. The inclusion of Carafa malt provides a deep black color and notes of espresso and dark chocolate, while wheat and oats ensure a silky delivery. Nine months in red wine oak barrels imparts a sophisticated vinous acidity and brandy-like warmth, layered with intriguing aromas of mint humbug and cola. On the palate, ripe banana esters from the Belgian yeast interact with treacle and herbal spice, concluding in a clean, lingering oak finish that belies its significant 11.1% strength.

Appearance. Opaque black (SRM 40+) with deep mahogany highlights at the edges. Displays a dense, persistent tan head with excellent lacing and fine carbonation beads.

Aroma. High intensity; a rich tapestry of roasted coffee, dark chocolate, and treacle. Characteristic peppery phenols and ripe banana esters are met by red wine tannins, warming brandy, and a unique herbal mint character with subtle oak.

Taste. Initial impressions of espresso and burnt sugar transition into spicy pepper and herbal notes. Moderate hop bitterness is augmented by a bright, red-wine-driven acidity. Ripe fruit esters complement the oaky, very dry finish which remains clean despite the complexity.

Mouthfeel. Medium body with a luxurious, silky texture derived from the oats and wheat. High carbonation provides an effervescent, light lift on the palate. Significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present alongside a light, vinous tartness.

On the nose there are endless and complex interactions between cola, chocolate, coffee, mint humbug, warming oak, and spice. The myriad flavours touch on treacle, ripe banana, espresso, brandy, and a clean herbal warmth, balanced against a red-wine influenced acicity. The body is smooth and lighter than you’d expect from this black beer.
