This American Barleywine presents an opulent sensory journey shaped by two years in bourbon casks. A complex grist of Pale, Munich, Cara, Crystal, and Brown malt creates a deep, toffee-rich foundation layered with honey and fruitcake. The extended aging introduces sophisticated sherry-like oxidation and oak-derived vanilla, while bright notes of stewed orange, blackcurrant, and cranberry emerge alongside an exotic hint of Turkish delight. At 11.5% ABV, it delivers a powerful yet smooth alcohol warmth that integrates seamlessly with assertive hop bitterness, culminating in a lingering, viscous finish of dark raisins and caramelized sugar.
Appearance. Deep copper to light brown with striking ruby highlights. It displays a moderately low, light tan head with limited retention typical of its high strength, accompanied by noticeable legs when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity with a dominant rich malt profile of toffee, toasted bread, and dark fruitcake. The bourbon barrel influence provides clear oak and vanilla notes, intertwined with esters of blackcurrant and raisin. Subtle American hop character persists as a resinous backdrop, while a pleasant, refined alcohol presence suggests aged sherry.
Taste. A massive initial impression of honey and caramel-like sweetness from the Munich and Crystal malts. Complex mid-palate flavors of cranberry, stewed orange, and Turkish delight provide a tart and floral counterpoint. Assertive hop bitterness provides necessary balance against the dense malt. The finish is long and warming, evolving into a toffee-laden aftertaste with lingering notes of dark fruit and toasted oak.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is present throughout without being harsh or solventy.
