BrewDog Abstrakt AB:18
This massive Imperial Brown Ale presents a decadent sensory tapestry woven over two years of rum barrel maturation. A base of rich chocolate and toasty nuttiness is dramatically transformed by the inclusion of Scottish tayberries and purple raspberries, offering a bright, tart contrast to the deep malt sweetness. The influence of oak provides a sturdy structure of vanilla and spice, while a strategic blend with fresh, hoppy Black Ale introduces vibrant notes of blackcurrant and citrus. It is a complex, warming experience where the spirituous rum character meets a sharp berry punch, finishing with a lingering, sophisticated dark fruit depth.
Appearance. Very dark brown (35 SRM) with deep mahogany highlights. Pours with a dense, creamy light tan head featuring excellent retention and thick lacing. Opaque clarity due to high gravity and fruit additions.
Aroma. High intensity aroma of rich chocolate, toasty nuts, and dark caramel. Deep rum-soaked oak notes provide vanilla and spice, layered with a sharp, authentic tartness from raspberries and tayberries. A subtle citrus and blackcurrant hop character emerges from the fresh blending component.
Taste. Initial impression is a luxurious, malty-rich sweetness reminiscent of chocolate cake and molasses. This is quickly balanced by a bold punch of tart red berries and dark fruit acidity. Medium-high bitterness is well-integrated with woody tannins and warming rum. The finish is long and complex, transitioning from sweet malt to a dry, oaky, and citrusy aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a velvety texture. Carbonation is moderate, providing enough lift to prevent cloying. Pronounced but smooth alcohol warmth is present, with a very light lingering astringency from the berries and oak.
