BrewDog Abstrakt AB:17
This Imperial take on an American Porter presents a decadently dark profile driven by a massive infusion of Has Bean coffee and spicy rye. Poured pitch black, it exudes intense aromas of espresso, dark chocolate, and licorice, softened by the addition of fragrant vanilla pods. On the palate, the three-stage coffee addition provides layers of roasted depth and charred wood, while the rye adds a distinct spicy counterpoint to the rich, malty sweetness. A full-bodied, unctuous mouthfeel carries the significant alcohol warmth through a lingering, highly torrefied finish, showcasing a complex interplay of bitter bean and sweet bean.
Appearance. SRM 40+; deep black and opaque. Topped with a dark brown, fleeting head that settles quickly with minimal lacing.
Aroma. High intensity; dominated by pungent burnt coffee, espresso, and heavily roasted malts. Complementary notes of vanilla, dark chocolate, and spicy rye grains. Esters are low, while hop aroma is largely masked by the intense coffee and malt presence.
Taste. Bold initial impression of heavily roasted grain and espresso. Rich flavors of black licorice and dark chocolate follow, enhanced by a spicy rye character. Bitterness is moderate to firm but balanced by a decadent malt sweetness. The finish is long and torrefied with a subtle woody dryness.
Mouthfeel. Full and unctuous body. Carbonation is low to moderate. Significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present. Smooth and creamy texture with a light, lingering astringency from the dark malts and roasted coffee.

Courtesy of Has Bean, we’ve got a rich mix of spicy, bitter and heady coffee flavours mixing with the vanilla pods we threw in for good measure. AB:17 is in the final days of maturation and is almost ready for bottling. It is tasting incredibly smooth and decadent. A perfect winter beer?
