Strange Symmetry is a refined take on the modern West Coast American IPA, emphasizing a lean malt structure that lets the vibrant hops radiate. This beer presents a vivid sensory interplay between Citra and Nelson Sauvin, delivering a bright bouquet of pink grapefruit, crushed gooseberries, and subtle white wine notes. The fermentation is exceptionally clean, providing a transparent backdrop for the dual hop profile. On the palate, a crisp, grainy malt baseline supports a firm but smooth bitterness that never lingers too long. It finishes bone-dry and refreshing, embodying a contemporary approach to the style where high drinkability meets intense aromatic complexity.
Appearance. Color is a brilliant, medium gold (approx. 6 SRM) with exceptional clarity. Topped by a medium-sized, persistent white head that leaves delicate lacing on the glass.
Aroma. High aromatic intensity featuring a prominent blend of citrus and tropical fruit. Citra contributes notes of grapefruit and lime zest, while Nelson Sauvin adds a distinctive vinous character resembling white grape and gooseberry. Low, clean, grainy maltiness supports the hops with no detectable diacetyl or yeast esters.
Taste. The initial impression is hop-forward, dominated by grapefruit, passionfruit, and a crisp white wine edge. Malt flavor is low and neutral, providing a grainy foundation without caramel sweetness. Bitterness is firm and medium-high, providing a clean, refreshing bite. The finish is very dry and crisp with a lingering, resinous hop aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-light body with a smooth, crisp texture. Carbonation is moderate-high, enhancing the refreshing quality. Alcohol warmth is very light and well-integrated; no astringency or harshness is present.
