Empress Tonkoko is an indulgent Imperial Stout that presents a profound sensory experience of sweetness and depth. Pouring an impenetrable jet black, it immediately releases an intense bouquet of toasted coconut, spiced tonka bean, and rich dark chocolate, underpinned by sweet vanilla bean. The 10.6% ABV provides a significant but smooth boozy warmth that carries the heavy weight of its complex adjuncts. On the palate, luscious layers of cocoa and creamy coconut meld with the almond and cinnamon-like nuances of tonka. This is a massive, velvety beer where the roast malt bitterness balances the residual sweetness, resulting in a lingering, spirit-like finish.
Appearance. Opaque, jet black (40+ SRM) with a thick, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention. High viscosity is apparent through noticeable legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity. Dominant notes of toasted coconut and sweet vanilla are layered over rich dark chocolate and cocoa. Distinctive spicy, almond-like tonka bean character provides a unique complexity. Low dark fruit esters of plum or raisin are present alongside a noticeable but smooth alcohol presence.
