This Imperial Stout offers a profound sensory experience, defined by its maturation in Laphroaig and bourbon barrels. The initial impact is a bold, smouldering peat smoke and medicinal earthiness derived from the Islay casks, which seamlessly intertwines with the intense roasted malt base of espresso and dark chocolate. As it breathes, the bourbon influence emerges, softening the edges with layers of rich vanilla, burnt caramel, and sticky toffee. At 15% ABV, it presents a viscous, velvet-like texture. Dark fruit esters of prune and fig linger in the background, concluding in a warming, complex finish of charred oak and bittersweet roast.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (40+ SRM); pours with a dense, mocha-colored head that shows moderate retention. Distinct legs are visible on the glass, indicating high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring a complex blend of medicinal peat smoke, charred oak, and bittersweet chocolate. Prominent notes of vanilla and caramel from the bourbon barrels balance the earthy, phenolic character. Low to moderate esters of raisin and plum are present alongside a noticeable, clean alcohol warmth.
Taste. The palate is dominated by intense roasted grains, cocoa, and a heavy, smouldering peat presence. The mid-palate reveals bourbon-driven sweetness including toffee and vanilla. High bitterness is well-supported by a massive malt backbone. The finish is long and complex, transitioning from sweet oak to a lingering, ashen, and warming aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Very full-bodied and chewy with a thick, syrupy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's weight. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth is felt in the chest and throat, remaining well-integrated.
