Brasserie Valduc-Thor Thortuga

This Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a decadent, multi-layered journey inspired by "The Pirate’s" voyage through spirits. At a potent 11% ABV, it balances the style’s signature deep malt richness—reminiscent of dark caramel and toasted bread—with the sophisticated influence of both whisky and rum barrels. Expect a harmonious collision of Connemara’s misty, peat-kissed smoke and the lush, tropical sweetness of the Caribbean. Dried fruit esters of figs and dates weave through a warming, spirituous backbone, creating an intoxicating complexity. It is a comforting, full-bodied experience that lingers with smooth vanilla and oak, making it an ideal companion for slow sipping by a winter fire.
Appearance. Pours a deep, mahogany coppery-brown with a massive, dense, and moussy light tan head that exhibits exceptional persistence and fine lacing. The body shows brilliant clarity when held to the light.
Aroma. High intensity. A complex tapestry of bready-toasty malt and dark caramel is layered with deep esters of dried figs, plums, and raisins. Notable barrel influence introduces notes of vanilla, toasted oak, and a whisper of peaty smoke. A moderate, spicy alcohol presence is perfumy rather than hot, complemented by subtle black pepper phenols. Hop aroma is negligible.
Taste. The initial impression is one of luxurious malt richness, featuring flavors of dark caramel and toasted crusts. Mid-palate reveals a lush profile of dried cherries and dates, seamlessly integrated with the sweet, tropical warmth of rum and a refined, smoky whisky undertone. Bitterness is medium-low, providing just enough structure to balance the residual sweetness. The finish is moderately sweet and warming, with lingering notes of vanilla and oaky tannins.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, velvety texture. High carbonation provides a lively lift that prevents the high ABV from feeling syrupy. A smooth, significant alcohol warmth is present but well-integrated, providing a comforting glow without harshness or astringency.
