The sensory profile is dominated by rich espresso and bittersweet chocolate, interwoven with the distinct vanilla and toasted oak signatures of Four Roses bourbon barrels. As the beer warms, the Willett Rye Reserve casks contribute a complex layer of cracked black pepper and spicy grain character. On the palate, a thick, velvety texture carries flavors of molasses, dried figs, and charred wood. The finish is long and warming, balancing deep roasted malt bitterness with the honeyed sweetness of aged spirit and a lingering rye spice.
Appearance. Opaque jet black (40+ SRM) with a dense, creamy dark mocha head that shows moderate retention. High viscosity creates visible legs on the glass when swirled.
Aroma. High intensity. Layers of dark chocolate, roasted coffee beans, and black licorice meet a heavy barrel profile of bourbon-soaked oak, vanilla, and caramel. Distinct spicy rye notes and a hint of vinous dark fruit like prunes and raisins.
Taste. Intensely flavorful with an initial hit of fudgy malt and dark fruit. Mid-palate reveals charred oak, spicy rye, and a smooth bourbon sweetness. Bitterness is firm but well-integrated against the massive malt backbone. The finish is long and complex with lingering cocoa and wood spice.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, luscious, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low, enhancing the richness. A significant, smooth alcohol warmth glows in the throat without being harsh or solventy.
