This Ordinary Bitter is a sessionable summer refresher crafted with DEYA, highlighting a blend of Herefordshire-grown UK Chinook and Phoenix hops. The base features spelt, which introduces a rustic, nutty, and slightly grainy complexity to the bready malt profile. Aromas of floral spice, resinous pine, and soft citrus from the UK Chinook lead into a palate where Phoenix hops provide earthy and subtle spicy undertones. The bitterness is firm but balanced, characteristic of the style, finishing dry and crisp. At 3.8% ABV, it prioritizes high drinkability with a modern, bright twist on a traditional British classic.
Appearance. Deep gold to pale amber (approx 9-11 SRM) with very good clarity. Topped by a thin, white, creamy head with moderate retention and light lacing.
Aroma. Moderate intensity with a focus on earthy and spicy hop notes. UK Chinook provides hints of pine and grapefruit zest, while Phoenix adds a floral, herbal quality. The malt is bready and biscuity with a unique nutty, rustic grain note from the spelt. Low fruity esters of red apple.
Taste. Initial impression is of firm hop bitterness, followed by a clean, bready malt backbone. Hop flavors of resinous pine, spice, and earthiness are prominent. The spelt adds a pleasant, grainy texture and slight nuttiness. Finishes dry with a lingering, crisp bitterness and very low caramel sweetness. No diacetyl present.
Mouthfeel. Light to medium-light body with a slightly softer texture from the spelt. Moderate carbonation provides a crisp bite. No alcohol warmth is perceived, making it highly sessionable.
