This collaboration Foreign Extra Stout presents a profound dark and roasty profile, reflecting its heritage as a birthday tribute to a classic London export. High-intensity aromas of roasted coffee and dark chocolate lead into a complex palate characterized by burnt toast and bittersweet cocoa. Deep layers of dried dark fruits—suggestive of raisins and prunes—emerge as the beer warms, balanced by a firm hop bitterness that ensures a clean, moderately dry finish. At 7.1% ABV, it provides a well-integrated warmth and a smooth, creamy texture, embodying the rich yet drinkable spirit of a traditional Foreign Extra Stout.
Appearance. Opaque black (SRM 40) with a large, persistent tan head that exhibits excellent retention and leaves thick lacing.
Aroma. High intensity of roasted grain, specifically coffee and dark chocolate. Moderate dark fruit esters including plum and raisin. A low, clean alcohol presence and a faint earthy hop aroma are also detectable.
Taste. Initial impression is a bold, roasty bitterness. Flavors of burnt toast and espresso dominate, followed by subtle chocolate sweetness. Low to medium fruitiness reminiscent of dried dark fruits provides complexity. Finishes moderately dry with a lingering roasted grain character and firm bitterness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, slightly creamy texture. Carbonation is moderately high. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth is present.
