Intrepid Observation is a decadent, high-gravity American Strong Ale that marries the rich depths of an English-Style Barleywine with the robust intensity of an Imperial Stout. Poured black with subtle amber reflections, it radiates a complex bouquet of Madagascar vanilla and brûléed sugar. Extended aging in a diverse array of bourbon barrels, including Buffalo Trace and Heaven Hill, infuses the liquid with sophisticated layers of toasted oak and tobacco. The palate is a silky tapestry of sweet vanilla balanced by wood-honed bitterness. Despite its potent 12.7% ABV, it finishes with a surprising dryness, ensuring a refined, warming sensory experience.
Appearance. Deep ebony to black (40+ SRM) with translucent amber highlights at the edges. Small, creamy, light tan head with moderate to low retention, leaving a slight oily sheen and fine lacing.
Aroma. High intensity. Bold Madagascar vanilla dominates, supported by rich aromas of brûléed sugar, toffee, and dark chocolate. Significant barrel influence provides notes of charred oak, tobacco, and bourbon-soaked wood. Subtle hints of dark fruit esters and a clean, warming alcohol presence.
Taste. Initial impression is a rich, silky sweetness driven by vanilla and caramelized malts. Mid-palate reveals layers of dark chocolate, toasted nuts, and tobacco from the bourbon barrel aging. Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a luxurious, velvety creaminess. Carbonation is moderate-low. A noticeable, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh or solventy.
