This Imperial Stout presents a commandingly dark presence reminiscent of the classic Russian tradition. It leads with a deep sensory profile where roasted malts evoke evocative layers of bittersweet cocoa and espresso-like coffee. The experience is defined by its substantial structural weight and a velvety texture that carries through to a warming, liquorous finish. The 10.8% ABV is well-integrated, providing a luxurious depth rather than sharp heat. Complex and harmonious, it balances high bitterness against a rich, dark malt backbone, leaving a lingering impression of charred grain and subtle dark fruit esters that evolve as the beer warms in the glass.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40 SRM). Topped with a dense, persistent toasted tan foam crown. High viscosity is apparent in the form of visible legs when the glass is swirled.
Aroma. High intensity aroma featuring a rich blend of roasted grain, bittersweet chocolate, and dark roast coffee. Secondary notes of black licorice and dried plums emerge as it warms. Hop character is low and earthy. No sharp or solventy alcohol notes are present.
Taste. Initial impression of massive dark chocolate and roasted malt, followed by intense coffee flavors. Medium-high bitterness provides a firm counterpoint to the malt sweetness. Fermentation character includes subtle notes of prune and raisin. The finish is long and complex, ending on a drying, roasty note with a significant, smooth liquorous warmth.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and chewy with a velvety, luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate, enhancing the beer's creamy mouth-coating quality. A noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth provides a comforting glow without harshness.
