The 2024 Dark Knight is a decadent Imperial Stout that showcases an immense depth of roasted character and barrel-aged complexity. Reaching 13.2% ABV, it presents an intense sensory profile defined by bittersweet chocolate, espresso, and black licorice. The extensive aging in Woodford Reserve Bourbon barrels introduces lush layers of vanilla and toasted caramel, while the Corowa Whiskey barrels provide a distinctive spicy grain note and charred oak depth. The palate is harmoniously balanced by dark fruit esters of fig and raisin, concluding with a lingering, bittersweet finish and a smooth, spirituous warmth that reinforces its massive, velvety structure.
Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (40+ SRM). Pours with a dense, creamy, deep tan head that shows moderate retention and leaves significant lacing. High viscosity is apparent through visible legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex blend of bittersweet chocolate, roasted coffee, and black currants. The barrel influence is prominent, contributing rich vanilla, toasted oak, and a spicy whiskey character. Noticeable but smooth alcohol presence with very low earthy hop notes.
Taste. Initial impression is of rich dark chocolate and charred grain. Malt flavors of toast and caramel support the primary roast. Bitterness is firm and well-integrated (approx. 60-70 IBU context), balancing the residual sweetness. Mid-palate reveals notes of plum and raisin, while the finish is long, warming, and bittersweet with a lingering espresso aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a chewy, velvety, and luscious texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A significant, smooth warmth is present due to the high alcohol content, with no harsh astringency.
