This Red IPA, a collaboration between Boga and La Calavera, presents a vibrant sensory balance between assertive New World hops and complex specialty malts. A foundational grist of Extra Pale Ale and CaraRed provides a deep toasted caramel sweetness, while Red Rye adds a subtle spicy edge and Roasted Barley contributes to its deep hue. The hop profile is exceptionally broad, utilizing Columbus, Cascade, Simcoe, Citra, and Amarillo to deliver a multi-layered bouquet of citrus zest, tropical mango, and resinous pine. The experience culminates in a firm, lingering bitterness and a dry finish, showcasing the classic intensity of a well-crafted Specialty IPA.
Appearance. Deep reddish-amber to copper (15-18 SRM). Brilliant clarity with a durable, dense off-white to light tan head that exhibits excellent persistence and lacing.
Aroma. High intensity hop aroma featuring bright citrus notes of grapefruit and orange from Citra and Amarillo, paired with tropical pineapple and passionfruit. A distinct piney and resinous backbone from Simcoe and Columbus is balanced by a moderate toasted malt aroma featuring caramel and a faint peppery spice from the rye.
Taste. Strong initial impression of toasted bread and caramel sweetness. Mid-palate introduces a complex hop melange of citrus peel and resinous pine from the Cascade and Simcoe. Bitterness is firm and high, providing a structural counterpoint to the malt sweetness. The finish is notably dry and clean, leaving a lingering hop-derived bitterness and a light touch of toasted grain and spicy rye.
Mouthfeel. Medium body with a slight silkiness and moderate carbonation. A gentle, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, reflecting the strength of the beer. Smooth mouthfeel with very low astringency despite the high hopping rate.
