Toasted hazelnuts provide a savory, nutty depth that dovetails into the spicy warmth of cinnamon and the creamy softness of vanilla. The addition of lactose further enhances the base beer's natural viscosity, creating a velvety texture. Appearance. Jet black and completely opaque (SRM 40+). Renders a dense, deep tan head with moderate to low retention, leaving thick, oily legs on the glass indicative of its high viscosity and alcohol content.
Aroma. High intensity with a complex bouquet of espresso, bittersweet chocolate, and heavy roast. Pronounced notes of toasted hazelnuts and vanilla bean are layered over spicy cinnamon, sweet maple syrup, and bourbon-soaked oak. Low esters of prune and raisin are present alongside a noticeable but integrated spirit warmth.
Taste. Initial impression is rich and sweet with flavors of molasses, dark chocolate, and heavy roast. The mid-palate introduces nutty toasted hazelnut and woody cinnamon, followed by a creamy vanilla smoothness. Barrel aging contributes maple syrup sweetness and oak tannins. Moderate bitterness is well-balanced by the lactose and residual sugars, leading to a long, warming finish of cocoa and spice.
Mouthfeel. Full to very full-bodied with a thick, chewy, and velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. A smooth, noticeable alcohol warmth is present without being sharp or solventy, complemented by a slight creaminess from the lactose.
