Vile Smile presents as a sophisticated, high-gravity Winter sour, merging the sharp, clean acidity of a Straight Sour Beer with the decadence of a ten percent alcohol profile. The infusion of tart raspberry drives a vibrant red-fruit character, while the inclusion of maple offers a nuanced, woody depth that rounds out the sharp lactic bite. Extended aging in a Midleton Very Rare barrel introduces elegant layers of charred oak, toasted vanilla, and a subtle whisper of premium Irish whiskey. Despite its formidable strength, the beer maintains a focused fermentation profile, allowing the jammy fruit and spirit-forward complexity to harmonize through a crisp, acidic finish.
Appearance. Deep pinkish-amber to ruby red (12–16 SRM) from the raspberry infusion and barrel contact. The head is a thin, pink-tinted foam with poor retention, typical of high-alcohol sours, appearing clear to slightly hazy.
Aroma. High intensity with a dominant, sharp lactic sourness. Prominent jammy raspberry notes are layered over woody maple and the sophisticated influence of the Midleton Very Rare barrel, which contributes toasted oak, vanilla, and a light spirituous warmth. No hop aroma is present; the malt character is largely masked by fruit and barrel esters.
Taste. A bold initial impression of clean, citrusy lactic acidity and tart raspberry. Mid-palate reveals a subtle maple sweetness and bready malt, though the finish is decidedly off-dry. The barrel aging imparts complex tannins, vanilla, and a hint of whiskey grain. Hop bitterness is undetectable (near 0 IBU), and the balance is firmly struck between sharp acidity and rich, fruit-laden complexity. No acetic vinegary notes are present.
Mouthfeel. Medium-bodied, which is fuller than the style standard due to the high alcohol content and maple addition. Carbonation is moderate, providing a crispness that cuts through the warmth. A significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present without being harsh.
