This Imperial Stout presents an opulent sensory landscape, shaped by its dual maturation in Ruby Port and MGP bourbon barrels. Intense aromas of dark chocolate and vanilla bean intertwine with a bright top note of orange zest. The vinous influence of the Port provides a deep base of plum and raisin, while the bourbon contributes charred oak and rich caramel. On the palate, a velvety sweetness is countered by roasted malt bitterness and a hint of citrus pith. It is a harmonious, warming display of barrel complexity, finishing with lingering echoes of cocoa and fortified wine that reflect a sophisticated maturation process.
Appearance. Jet black and opaque (SRM 40+). Pours with a dense, dark tan head with moderate retention; high viscosity is evident through thick legs on the glass.
Aroma. High intensity; prominent dark chocolate and vanilla lead, followed by distinct notes of orange oil and rich Ruby Port esters—plum, raisin, and black currant. Subtle bourbon-derived caramel and charred oak provide a sturdy, complex backbone.
Taste. Initial impression of decadent chocolate and orange marmalade. The mid-palate reveals layers of toasted oak, vanilla, and sweet bourbon. Port barrel influence adds a complex vinous character with deep dried fruit notes. Malt bitterness is firm but balanced by a moderate residual sweetness, finishing long and warming with cocoa and roast.
Mouthfeel. Full-bodied and viscous with a chewy, velvety texture. Carbonation is low to moderate. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth provides a pleasant, well-integrated glow without any solvent harshness.
