Belgian Dark Strong Ale 10.5 º
This Belgian Dark Strong Ale presents a sophisticated sensory profile enriched by its maturation in Crama Ferdi red wine barrels. The base offers deep bready malt and dark fruit notes of raisin and plum, seamlessly layered with the aromatic intensity of tonka and vanilla. The honey addition provides a subtle floral depth, while the barrel aging introduces a refined vinous character with hints of oak and red grape. It is a complex, warming winter ale where the spicy Belgian yeast phenols meet the almond-like sweetness of tonka, culminating in a smooth, lingering finish that balances its significant strength and avoids being syrupy.
Appearance. Deep coppery-brown with ruby highlights (20-22 SRM). Displays a dense, persistent, light-tan moussy head with excellent lacing. Generally clear with high visibility.
Aroma. High intensity. Complex bouquet of rich, toasty malt and dark caramel. Strong esters of dried cherries, figs, and raisins. Notable spicy phenols of vanilla and almond-like tonka, complemented by a floral honey sweetness. Significant vinous notes from the red wine barrel include oak and dark berries. Alcohol is present but soft and perfumy, never harsh.
Taste. Rich maltiness leads with flavors of toasted bread, dark caramel, and honey. Dark fruit esters of plum and prune are prominent. The tonka and vanilla provide a dessert-like complexity without cloying sweetness. Mid-palate reveals red wine tannins and oak from the barrel aging. Bitterness is medium-low, providing balance against the malt. Finish is moderately dry and warming, with a lingering aftertaste of spiced dark fruit and a hint of vinous tartness.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a creamy, luxurious texture. Carbonation is moderate to high, providing a lively lift that prevents heaviness on the palate. Noticeable but smooth alcohol warmth reflecting the 10.5% ABV. Low astringency from the wine barrel oak.
