This anniversary ale scales the traditional British Brown Ale foundation—noted for its toffee and nutty malt character—into a bold, 11% ABV experience. Port barrel aging introduces deep vinous notes and oak tannins that complement the base malt's caramel profile. The addition of raspberry provides a sharp, jammy acidity that contrasts with the initial sweetness, while vanilla contributes a smooth, aromatic bridge between the tart fruit and the rich, dark grain bill. The result is a complex imperial dark sour that balances its substantial alcohol warmth with vibrant fruit and decadent, dessert-like nuances, maintaining a malty core despite the intense secondary fermentation character.
Appearance. Dark reddish-brown to deep mahogany with brilliant ruby highlights. Displays a moderate, light tan head with fair retention and light lacing.
Aroma. High intensity; sweet toffee and toasted nutty malt aromas are layered with jammy raspberry and vinous Port barrel notes. Vanilla adds a creamy sweetness, accompanied by a sharp lactic tartness and light dark fruit esters.
Taste. Initial impression of rich toffee and light chocolate malt sweetness quickly met by a firm, acidic raspberry punch. The middle palate reveals oak and dried fruit from the Port influence, while vanilla softens the finish. Low bitterness, with the balance shifted toward acidity and malt depth; finishes with a lingering fruit-and-oak complexity.
Mouthfeel. Full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Carbonation is moderate. Significant, well-integrated alcohol warmth is present, consistent with its high strength, without being harsh.
