This robust Export Porter presents a commanding sensory profile driven by a complex grain bill of Crystal, Chocolate, and Black malts. Expect deep layers of roasted coffee and rich caramel, significantly enhanced by the addition of dark muscavado sugar which imparts deep plum and liquorice tones. A bold hop presence characterizes this modern interpretation, utilizing Tradition and Columbus in the kettle, followed by a heavy dry-hop of Admiral and Columbus. The result is a big-hitting, dark, and fruity English Porter where earthy, spicy hop notes clash beautifully with dark fruit esters and a lingering, bitter roasted finish.
Appearance. Deep mahogany to near-black (30+ SRM) with ruby highlights at the edges; opaque in the glass. Crowned by a dense, persistent light-tan head with excellent lacing.
Aroma. High intensity featuring dark chocolate and espresso roastiness. Substantial dark fruit character of plum and raisin is present, alongside a distinct spicy and earthy hop aroma. Subtle molasses and liquorice sweetness from the dark muscavado sugar merges with moderate fruity esters.
Taste. Initial rich impression of caramel and toffee gives way to intense roasted coffee and bitter chocolate flavors. Mid-palate reveals complex plum and liquorice notes from the brewing sugars. High hop bitterness from Columbus and Admiral provides a firm counterpoint to the malt, leading to a long, dry, and resinous finish with a clean roasted aftertaste.
Mouthfeel. Medium-full body with a smooth, creamy texture. Moderate carbonation. A noticeable but well-integrated alcohol warmth reflects its export strength, without being harsh or astringent.
